Uk Photography Stores
Thursday, April 30th, 2009Which Mac laptop for a photography student with SMALL budget? UK?
My daughter is a photography student and wants a Mac laptop. She wants to spend as little as possible as she’s a poor student. She’s seen some for £699 in PC World but can she get a better deal?
She mostly uses it for photography – photoshop & storing photos etc but also for the usual MSN, facebook or whatever is popular at the moment. Oh and she also listens to music using itunes.
Happy to consider online stores and refurbished if it has a gurantee.
Thanks!
Interested to hear replies also regarding Mac versus PC. She wants Mac not because it is fashionable but because it appears to be the industry standard regarding Art & Photography. Also she has been told she will have less problems with viruses etc (as dad won’t be on hand to sort out all her issues!
At last! Someone asking a sensible question about a proper computer!
Apple offer a 7.5% discount for students if purchased via their online store, and there are plenty of MacBooks available on their refurb store.
Why don’t you offer to put up half so she can buy a MacBook Pro as it would suit her needs better (she can always pay you back at a later date). The largest HDD in a MacBook is only 250GB, whereas the MBPs go up to 300GB and that extra 50GB can make all the difference.
Has she got a birthday coming up? Why don’t you say you’ll stump up something towards a MBP for her birthday pressie?
I’ve got a second gen MBP (I’m a photographer) and it’s still going strong (I’ve stuck a new 320GB HDD) in it though.
MBPs – larger drives, more RAM (and the RAM in a MBP is a piece of p*ss to upgrade – and Crucial is the best place to buy it) and, therefore, she can manipulate large RAW files in Photoshop/Aperture/Lightroom/her photo software of choice.
Go on, treat her… ;o)
