Contacts Dvd Photography

Sketchy freelance photography dilemma?

I recently posted on craigslist offering to photograph any events for free so as to build references and obtain images for my portfolio. I was contacted by a party that wanted me to cover a celebrity charity birthday event.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the person in charged asked that I shoot on THEIR cf cards so as to insure that they receive the images (they supposedly have had problems with photographers in the past). They then stated that i could pick up a dvd with the images a few days later.

My main concern is that after I give them their CF cards I am in a completely powerless position as they could simply decide to drop all communications with me afterwards and even worse, not credit me at all when using the images.

What can I do to ensure I don’t get screwed?

Oh dear.
What sort of terms and conditions or contract did you get the customer to sign?
What did they get you to sign?

Basically – the copyright of any images taken is yours whether or not they are taken on your card or theirs.

You should have said no to the request. You are the photographer, you control the images.

This is the problem with doing things for free or not having a proper contract with the customer.
If you hand over the cards then there is nothing you can do to ensure you “don’t get screwed”.

In the future, ensure ALL details are sorted out prior to the shoot, if the “customer” wants to change the rules once the shoot is underway then refuse or ensure that the changes do not affect your copyright or ability to control the images.
