How can I get a degree in BOTH Photography and Graphic Design? How do majors and minors work?
Both BFAs offer courses in the other, but focus primarily on one or the other. If I completed a BFA in Graphic Design, could I go back, already have taken the core requirements, and take only the major requirments for Photography to earn that degree? How do double majors work? I have NO idea how a majors and minors work…
If you want to earn both degrees at the same university, then you should be able to do exactly what you describe – apply the prerequisites you took for Graphic Design to the Photography degree, assuming they are the same. Before you start down this path by actually taking classes, however, go to an academic adviser in the department/school to confirm first that you can do this and second that there is no “application process” required to ensure you will be awarded both degrees.
You would only be able to be formally recognized with, say, a major in Graphic Design and a MINOR in Photography if your department offers that option. Many universities do not offer “minors”, meaning that you would have nothing on your transcript after graduation that indicated you had completed a formal program in Photography. A lot of schools now offer certificate programs, “areas of concentration”, etc. in lieu of minors. That would also be a question that can really only be answered by an academic adviser in your specific department.
