Almost all new Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras have multiple TTL (Through The Lens) metering modes. Each manufacturer calls their modes measurement of different names, but basically they all fall into four categories: in situ, in the center, and multi-pattern metering matrix, the last beinga proprietary to Nikon.

- metering metering, as the name implies, says the light of a very small or part of the global scene. This mode reads froma light that reflects what is inside the small circle or rectangle in half its viewfinder. is willa% not more than 9.5 of the global scene. Conel metering,  can pinpoint the area to be metered for light reflection. The disadvantage is that your heart to identify the area to be metered for light reflection.

Wait a minute, so the location can be both an advantage and disadvantage? The advantage is that they are free to choose where to take a meter reading from a scene. Just put the circle or rectangle in the area to be measured and press the shutter button half way to see the shutter speed and aperture settings.Â

The disadvantage is the TTL meters on your camera sees everything as the mid tone or 18% reflectance. If the place to choose isa tone average, the exposure of the scene the could be higher or lower exposure. For exposure precisely, to choose something close to middle tone, such as grass, cinnamon bark, light blue sky now tone. brown meat or alternatively, take the reading and manually dial in exposure compensation to achieve mid-tone settings. The gauge field can be difficult to learn, but once you have mastered, you will find it indispensable when you want the subject in the field, correctly exposed in a high contrast situation.

Weighted Metering center, a center-weighted metering is the most common of all measurement systems and that used in all target and shoot cameras. Center-weighted metering light Lee from about 75% A ofa the center stage, the heavier weight, then a light read 25% remaining the scene and normally weighs.  This information is calculated by the coming end to exposure camerae reading.  Remember, the overall area measured needs Medium halftone. Other means than tone required to compensate by using the compensation function Youra exposure SLR camera digital.

Multi-pattern metering-A Multi-Pattern Metering is also known as evaluative metering. With this method, the display is divided into segments measuring around auto-focus sensors. Once you choose the autofocus sensor, a measurement standard center weighted is built around the sensor selectedÂ. This system is basically the same as the center-weighted metering system, except the reading center weighted is taken from the auto-focus sensor selected instead of from the center of the viewfinder.

A proprietary Matrix Metering with Nikon-segments measurement, multiple-use Matrix Metering autofocus arranged around Thea-segments in the display much like the multi-pattern metering system, but also uses a real database of photographic situations. This system works for each segment individually measured and assigned a level of light. These light levels form a pattern of contrast. Thea change patterns then filtered through the database in DSLRÂ finding the exposure compensation aa suitable for a particular scene. With this system, no manual exposure compensation is necessary because the measurement system automatically does it for you.

When using each measurement system- EACHA measurement system has its own use in specific situations. Generally, a center-weighted isa besta to use when learning to take pictures. As you master Thisa a measuring system may move to metering. Here you can find a place in the scene and manually apply exposure compensation. Matrix use or multi-pattern measuring for the rapidly changing light situations or when faced with a lighting of great complexity.

Now would be a good time to dust off your camera manual and read up on specific measurement modes for camera.  Mastering measurement modes take your images to a set newa and above.
