What are some tips and tricks for children in the photograph? portraits for children?

Hello everyone, I've been a photographer serious amateur and just started shooting professionally. I will be taking photos for a mother and her son, 6 years old on Saturday. I wonder if there some tips and tricks to take portraits of children. I always try to know my subject a little before starting to shoot and this is my first time to throw 6 years of age. I would like learn how to take the child to work with me and not be bored during the session. I thought of bribing him with a toy or a candy bar, but that's all. Any help welcome! THX

Do not sit down, raise them, and hope to get a good image. Just not going to happen. If you must have formal shots, you can give them something to play while taking the photo for a natural look. I have found with children is much better, simply turn them loose in the area to photograph and continue with the camera. Watch what they do naturally, and photography. Does the child like sports? Bring a basketball or something … To know what like (call your mom) and bring some stuff to keep him occupied.
