Photography Lessons Chicago
What’s the best place to take photography lessons in Chicago?
It depends on what you want to learn, and what you think is “the best”.
Chicago Photography Center – www.chicagophoto.org – is a long-running program that has a great reputation. It’s intensive: for the basic courses (Photo I-III) you’ll spend time in lectures, and then come back for darkroom sessions. (If you take the film courses, you’ll develop your own film at home and use the darkroom time to make prints.) CPC is a not-for-profit and you get a lot of bang for your buck for the classes.
Harold Washington City College also has an extensive listing of photography courses.
The Art Institute’s continuing ed division’s beginning photography course is consistently highly recommended by polls in Chicago magazine.
I also took a week-long intensive beginning film course at Roosevelt University. It might be a bit of a stretch – 9-5 every day for a week at a private college sticker price – but it was a great experience. You shoot in the morning, develop around lunch, and make prints in the afternoon. The rapid processing made it easier to understand how the different elements of exposure come together.
So, lots of options. Depends on what you need from a class, what kind of time commitment you can make, and how much you want to spend.
