URGENT! Any group of good advice for photography?

I have a little work to do, a birthday party, and will be dark. I've done shortly before the wedding, but was never really happy with my shots time indoors at night. I think they are always too blurry or the flash drowns everyone. Anybody else I know has some advice on what adjustments, etc use? I need something quick, the child has a disability and they told me that has a period very short attention. I'm using a Olympus E400 SLR. In addition, any well-posed group photo, I'm sick of high in back, small strokes in front!

If you have a lens with a quick release, the use to which it is the widest (largest) value, f/2.8 is a good start. Crank the ISO up to 400-800 if they have this goal quickly. Otherwise, 800-1600. Some of the best photos I've seen would be dishonest party photos. Take pictures of the party, as is happening, try to make them stronger than any material that poses you may have to do. Another tip I have is that RAW and underexpose 1 / 3 or 2 / 3. You can always adjust the further exposure, and lower exposure lets you shoot at a shutter speed slightly higher.
