Photograph of the first part
What is stock photography? In a nutshell, is to take a group of images, placing them in a library with the hope that sometime in the future, image, or many others have purchased a license or anyone. Here's your challenge as a photographer, what subject? Who knows? License images that I thought I would never be of interest to anyone and I thought it would have been seen or license.
Disconcerting, my advice, you should have a library or database of intensity images on topics you already know. My collection now exceeds 60,000 images southern United States. After twenty years in business, publications I have worked with the knowledge that this is my specialty. I get emails almost daily from various publications aimed at the travel pictures of places, events or nature that call the South home.
What does it mean for you? Specialize, if not, be lost in the millions of other generic images found anywhere on the World Wide Web!
Here are some questions you will have to address. Are you going to shoot for the commercial publishing market, or both? Do you plan to offer their images as royalty-free or rights-managed? How is your workflow? How's the market?
Specialization – Is there a theme that you consider yourself an expert or you have a good or knowledge? If so, then perhaps this is where you should focus. Go to your local store and go through journals, check that matches their interest. Can the type of images found on the pages? If not, then work on your style or composition.
Commercial – If you are providing images to the commercial market, then you need to have the appropriate versions. Personal or property releases are needed. Make pocket communicated with you. Can not be shy, you will find that most people, once you explain what they do for a living are more than willing to sign a statement. So far, I've never had anyone refuse to sign one. You may provide a copy of the image as a form of compensation.
The way in public places are a kind of no man's land. There is really no right to privacy when taking photographs in a public place. Walking down a street, large public events where crowds gather, fill free to shoot. But if you stop in front of a restaurant and take a picture of people sitting inside, and then guess what, you need a statement.
L Editorial – Since publishing the images are basically used to tell a story, inform, used textbooks and other publications of this nature, rare releases time are necessary. I've only had a couple of situations where a publication has requested a release.
The best advice, if you are out taking pictures with an understanding that will offer the image.
